When Can I Apply for a Medicare Supplement Plan?

You have the following options when enrolling in a Medigap plan in Washington State:

1. Medigap Open Enrollment Period

When your eligibility for Original Medicare opens, you're also eligible for Medigap insurance. Once you are 65 years old and enrolled in Medicare Part B, your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins.

You have guaranteed issue rights during this period. These rights ensure the Medicare insurance company cannot deny you coverage under the Medicare Supplement plan of your choice. They must also give you the same rates as people with no health conditions, even if you have pre-existing conditions.

Private insurance companies will offer the lowest rates during your Open Enrollment Period. The effective date for new policies is typically 30 days after enrollment.

2. Special Enrollment Periods

If you qualify for a particular enrollment period, you may receive the same guaranteed issue rates after your Open Enrollment Period closes. For example, you may receive special enrollment privileges if you had medical insurance through your employer when you first enrolled in Part B but later lost that coverage.

3. Outside of Enrollment Periods

You can apply for Medicare Supplemental benefits anytime, even if your Open Enrollment Period has passed. However, the Medigap insurance company can use medical underwriting to determine a higher rate. They can also deny your Medicare Supplement plan coverage.

If You Are Under 65

You may not be able to purchase a Medicare Supplement insurance policy under age 65. However, several states must sell Medigap to those under 65 with a disability or end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Can I Use My Medigap Plan in Other States?

The beauty of Medicare Supplement plans is that they can be used anywhere in the country as long as the doctor you see or the healthcare facility you use accepts Medicare. Crossing state lines is not a problem because there are no preferred provider networks or referral requirements you have to meet. One of the primary benefits of a Medigap plan is that it gives you the freedom to seek the best care, whether in Washington State or Maine.

Medicare Supplement plans are the same in 46 other states. This means that the outline of coverage for Medigap Plan F is the same in North Carolina as in Washington State . Because the plans are standardized, you can keep your same project as long as you stay enrolled in Original Medicare. However, remember that your premium amount might change in your new location.
