When Can I Apply for a Medicare Supplement Plan?

Beneficiaries in Nebraska should enroll during their Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This is a six-month period that only occurs one time and cannot be repeated. The Open Enrollment Period starts the first month that a beneficiary is at least 65 years old and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, Medicare companies cannot charge higher prices or deny anybody who applies. This is called having guaranteed issue rights. Beneficiaries are not required to answer questions regarding their current or pre-existing health conditions, and those with medical issues will receive the same rates as healthier applicants if they apply within these six months.

Special Enrollment Periods

There are a few other instances where beneficiaries may have guaranteed rights such as losing group coverage, moving out of a plan's service area, or your insurance provider going out of business. If you fall into one of these categories, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period.

Outside of the OEP

Beneficiaries can apply for Medigap insurance outside the open enrollment period, but the insurer will then have the right to deny coverage or increase rates due to medical history.

If You are Under 65

If you are under 65, you may not be able to sign up for a Medigap plan unless you have a qualifying disability or ESRD (end-stage renal disease). Several states are required to sell at least one Medigap to beneficiaries under 65 with a disability. If you live in one of these states, your six-month Open Enrollment Period begins when your Part B coverage starts.
